![]() The village of Manhattoes, which became the city of New Amsterdam in 1653, was located in a section of what is now Manhattan. Peter Stuyvesant, director-general of the colony of New Netherland, attacked and captured the Swedish Fort Christina. The Manhattoes soldiers displayed as a standard, a beaver rampant on a field of orange. The beaver, along with windmills, is still part of the arms of the city. |
