The George Rex flags were protest flags used in New York at the start of the Revolutionary War. The flags were adopted following the passage of the Quebec Act 1774 whereby French Roman Catholics were granted emancipation and Roman Catholicism adopted as the state church of Quebec. The commonly accepted versions were altered Red Ensigns or Blue Ensigns with varitions of the words "George III Rex (Latin: King) and the Defender of the Liberties of America. No Popery". |
