This flag lists a few of Maryland's contributions to the CSA:
- On May 23, 1861, the Secretary of the Confederate States Navy, Stephen Mallory, appointed Lloyd J. Beall as Colonel Commandant of the Marine Corps, the only person to hold that position, and Beall served in that capacity throughout the war.
- William Norris, Chief Signal Officer of the Confederate States Army, Chief of the Signal Bureau, and head of the Confederate Secret Service Bureau
- The Confederate States Navy authorized nine admirals but only actually promoted two men to that rank during the American Civil War:
Franklin Buchanan and
Raphael Semmes.
