Vermont entered the union as the fourteenth state in 1791, but did not adopt a state flag until 1 May 1804, coinciding with the admission of the seventeenth state. This flag was designed to reflect the appropriate Federal flag change that should have occurred, namely 17 stars and 17 stripes, with the addition of the name "VERMONT" embroidered along the top. Since the U.S. flag did not change in that way, the Vermont state flag had more stripes than the national flag. |
