During the Civil War the largest organization from the state, North or South, was the Maryland Brigade. Formed in 1862, it operated independently in Western Maryland until July of 1863 when it joined the Army of the Potomac after the battle of Gettysburg. From the Wilderness to Appomattox, the Maryland Brigade was continuously marching and fighting with the Army of the Potomac. Dan Toomey has combined a very detailed account of the brigade’s war record with nearly 100 images of the men and their equipment who served in the various units that composed the Maryland Brigade. These are drawn from the author’s personal collection which took him over 40 years to acquire.

In the first chapter the reader is given an overview of the state’s pre-war militia system and mobilization. Following the war years, chapters cover demobilization and veterans’ activities. Several appendices expand on the brigade’s history by listing its Medal of Honor recipients and order of battle. For the first time since Appomattox, the Maryland Union soldier has been given the respect he deserves and the Maryland Brigade can take its place as an honored member of the Army of the Potomac.

Softbound, 8½x11", written by Daniel Carroll Toomey (2018), 172 pages, 134 illustrations, 3 maps, 4 appendices.
